Florida State University is ranked as one of the most successful producers of groundbreaking technologies in a new report from the National Academy of Inventors® and the Intellectual Property Owners Association.
FSU ranks 49th in the organizations’ “Top 100 Worldwide Universities Granted U.S. Utility Patents in 2016.” The annual report, which is compiled with data from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, reflects the cutting-edge research and innovation being pursued at universities around the world, including Florida State.
The university produced 48 patented technologies in 2016.
“While we are honored to be so highly ranked, we realize that the real value to society is when we can reduce our inventions to practice,” said Gary K. Ostrander, vice president for Research at Florida State University. “As such, we will continue to press forward on licensing these new technologies.”
Ostrander said that the report is a clear affirmation of the exceptional work that FSU is doing in patents. He added that the university has successfully developed a culture prioritizing academic innovation, and that focus generates benefits for state, national and global economies.
