Thrasher: has master plan for former Alumni Village property

"The last buildings at Florida State University’s Alumni Village are coming down, signaling the completion of demolition of what once was a popular student housing complex in southwest Tallahassee.
Alumni Village, built about 1960, included 96 buildings with nearly 800 apartments. It was created to provide housing for older returning students, married couples and international students. The last residents moved out in August 2014.
Mark Bertolami, FSU’s director of planning and space management, said, “We have no idea” about what to do on the 90-acres of land.
The demolition, which started last August, is expected to be completed by the first of September, said Dennis Bailey, FSU’s senior associate vice president for facilities.
“We will maintain it as green space until we identify a better use for the property,” Bailey said. “It’s a significant resource. I’m sure there will be a best solution. We haven’t figured it out yet.”

"FSU has no current plans for the 80-plus acres of Alumni Village. But it's close to Seminole Golf Course, the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering and the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory. So numerous ideas are being batted around by FSU, which as the most densely populated campus in the state university system is always searching for space."

""Surveys of the local market show that there is more than an adequate supply of alternative rental properties and on-campus housing options to accommodate Alumni Village residents,” said Adrienne Frame, director, University Housing. “While on-campus housing does not accommodate married students with children, there are many options in the local Tallahassee housing market for students with families, much of it in closer proximity to the main campus than Alumni Village. We will be working with the leaseholders over the next 15 months prior to closing the complex to assist them with their transition to other housing.”"

YUP. That's what it needs to be. There is enough space to get some serious research facilities built there. Some public-private research partnerships. Maybe even a "south side" FSU health clinic.

But given FSU's typical (lack of) ambition, I'm not expecting much of value to come out if this.
