FSU receives record-breaking number of admissions applications

The demand for a Florida State University education is on the rise with a record number of first-year applicants seeking admission.
Florida State received more than 48,000 first-year applications for admission to the 2018 summer and fall semesters before the first round of decisions that were released January 25.
That number is already ahead of last year’s record total of 41,411 applications for first-year admission to the Tallahassee campus. This year’s total is expected to surpass more than 50,000 applications as prospective students still have until the Feb. 7 final deadline to apply. The final round of decisions for first-year applicants will be announced March 29.
“The tremendous interest in Florida State University reflects our growing national prominence,” said President John Thrasher. “Word is out that FSU offers the education of a top research institution in a warm, welcoming and diverse academic environment.”
Over the past two years, Florida State has moved up 10 places in the U.S. News & World Report Best Colleges rankings. FSU is currently No. 33 among national public universities and boasts several Top 20 academic programs.
“FSU is a destination university where student success always has been and continues to be at the core of who we are,” said Hege Ferguson, director of admissions. “Students want to be a part of that experience.”
As more and more highly talented students enroll at Florida State, the university’s graduation and freshman retention rates also continue to soar. FSU’s freshman retention rate in 2017 ranks among the Top 15 public universities in the country.
It’s not just the number of applications that is increasing — the caliber of the applicants is, too. The middle 50 percent of accepted students for the fall semester had a grade point average in the range of 4.1-4.5 with a 1290-1400 total SAT score and 28-32 ACT composite score.
“We have an exceptionally strong applicant pool this year,” Ferguson said. “It is a daunting task selecting students from such a large and strong applicant pool, but in the end, it is about finding the right fit for the student and our university.”
While FSU is not able to admit everyone who wants to begin their first year at the main campus, the university has expanded opportunities for admission through the Seminole Pathways Program and the TCC2FSU Program.
Students selected for the Seminole Pathways Program are given four options of admission to Florida State, including beginning their studies at the FSU Panama City campus or at one of FSU’s study centers abroad. The TCC2FSU Program offers students a pathway to FSU upon earning an associate degree at Tallahassee Community College.
Students with admission notices have until May 1 to confirm whether they will enroll. FSU expects to enroll about 6,200 freshmen in the Class of 2022.

2018-19 Legislative Priorities
FSU continues ineffective policy of just asking for general pools of money. This does not get rewarded in the state leg. as much as specific big goal efforts.
FSU politicos often use FSU for their benefits (jobs, etc), but rarely actually use their political capital to benefit FSU.
FSU seems unwilling to attempt to make the big moves.

Jimbo, FSU, and the narrative (Update)
Some good and bad of Jimbo's tenure, but most importantly facts to address some of the false narratives (mainly by pro SEC media and Jimbo) being pushed regarding Jimbo and his tenure.
Numbers show, Jimbo was able to attract ELITE talent to FSU on a yearly basis, but his results went from less than elite, to average, to below average.

Yes, Jimbo Fisher has a National title. Yes, he had a very good 8-year run at Florida State. He was handed the keys to Bobby Bowden’s dynasty in Tallahassee, and he didn’t screw it up. Let’s see how he did:
During a 2-year run with Jameis Winston, the Seminoles were a staggering 27-1. They had a lineup full of NFL players. Literally, full. The entire 11-man offense from the 2013 National title team made it to the NFL. And the 11 starters on defense did, too. That’s obscene.
How much credit does Fisher get for that? Obviously you’ve got to recruit the players. Then again, how much does the FSU brand recruit itself?
In the years in which Winston did not play, Fisher was 56-22. Winning 71% of your games is nothing to scoff at, though much of that was compiled before Clemson and Dabo Swinney became a monster.
Fisher won at Florida State. His successor – likely Willie Taggart – will will in Tallahassee, too. The real question: Will Fisher win at Texas A&M? He’s going up against Tom Herman at Texas, a marriage I think will work. Gary Patterson has turned TCU into a power. Chad Morris is quickly turning SMU into a destination. Kliff Kingsbury is attracting talent to Texas Tech.
And Oklahoma still recruits the state of Texas very well.
All of those hurdles plus the most difficult division in America, the SEC West.
I don’t see how this will work for a guy like Fisher, who has never spent a minute of his career – coaching or playing – in Texas.

Stadium reduction. FSU Football, basketball, and baseball attendence trends (Update)
Interesting to see this happening at FSU and UF. My guess is FSU winds up around 70-72K and UF around 80-82K.

As part of this process, the stadium’s seating capacity could be reduced. More from the AP:
“There was a time when, probably when the north end zone (section) was done in the early ’90s, when seat count is all anyone cared about,” Stricklin said last week. “Just cram as many people as possible in there. Obviously that is not (the case) when you talk to people who do facilities and stadiums these days.
“That’s not as important as quality and making sure you’re creating an environment that people want to come and participate in. The days of fans being OK sitting three hours on a piece of aluminum, I think, are gone. So we’ve got to find ways to upgrade the overall quality.”
