to add some numbers to the discussion, listed below are the 34 schools that have more than 1 top 5 finish going back to 1968.
The columns are top 5 finishes, top 3 finishes and MNCs based on the AP poll. There are 12 schools with 10 or more and 20 with 5 or more top 5 finishes. Note that noone outside the top 20 has more than 3 top 5 finishes and only Pitt and TCU have more than 1 top 3 finishes. All of the top 20 but Oregon and Washington have AP MNCs (Washington won a coaches' title) and only Pitt and BYU outside that group have an MNC. The Florida schools with their great 80s-00s are well up in the rankings.
