  1. So within the US FSU fairs well, but abroad our rank has clearly fallen over the last decade?

    1. FSU has actually fallen with most rankings....including US News (you wouldn't know this from FSU's PR/BOT tone, but it is true).

FSU has really a very weak academic/research ambition and it is starting to show in research dollars and overall academic rankings. FSU's response has been to try and portray it better in PR releases.

In terms of actually academic strategies, FSU has almost none. It is a very status quo institution and in 2-3 decades, it will be very very apparent (but too late).

    2. Well, in the US News we were ~115th roughly 10 years ago. We're in the 90's now. And we're in the low/mid-40's of Publics. So that's a clear improvement, though our improvement has stalled the last couple years. (Granted, our rank had fallen in US News in the decade prior to that. And our student figures - SAT/ACT, Grad Rate, Retention Rate, etc. - were easily top 100, if not top 75 but other factors held us back.)

As far as things like research (and even endowment), then yes, we have sucked there. It's an absolute embarrassment that research has been FLAT for a decade and yet our BoT *never* questions it. It's a joke that we struggle in the State's performance funding metrics and yet, again, our BoT *never* mentions it. And I fully believe a monkey could grow the FSU Foundation endowment better than the actual managers of FSU's endowment fund.

It's why I was and still am vehemently against Thrasher as our President (ie, I wanted an academician). He's a good ol' boy that has made no mention of any of the above issues. But that's because our BoT is a group of good ol' boys that only cares about football. At some point, something will have to change, but it's hard to see how considering all the wrong people are in charge. I think it says a great deal about the faculty, staff and students at FSU that it's still ranked as respectably as it is despite having PISS POOR leadership at President and on the Board of Trustees (and at Governor the last 6 years).
