Marvin Jones officially is FSU’s 10th member of College Football HOF

Jones, a three-time All-American for FSU from 1990-92 before an 11-year career in the NFL, was formally announced as a 2022 inductee on Monday afternoon.

In three seasons, Jones finished with 369 tackles, a mark that still sits seventh in program history. The Coconut Grove, Fla., native tallied 133 tackles as a freshman, 125 as a sophomore and 111 as a junior.

The top defensive player in the nation in 1992, he was named the Sporting News Defensive Player of the Year, won the Butkus Award as top linebacker and won the Lombardi Award for linemen and linebackers. Jones also took home the Jack Lambert Trophy from the Touchdown Club of Columbus, was a unanimous All-American and finished fourth in Heisman Trophy voting, the highest finish for any Seminole defender.

Jones will be the 10^th Seminole inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame, joining former teammates Charlie Ward (inducted in 2006), Derrick Brooks (2016) and Terrell Buckley (2019) as well as head coach Bobby Bowden (2006). Ron Sellers (1988), Fred Biletnikoff (1991), head coach Darrell Mudra (2000), Ron Simmons (2009) and Deion Sanders (2011) are also enshrined in the College Football Hall of Fame.

Florida State soccer star Jaelin Howell repeats as MAC Hermann Trophy winner

For the second straight season, Jaelin Howell earned the nation’s top honor as the Missouri Athletic Club and United Soccer Coaches Association named Howell the winner of the MAC Hermann Trophy, presented to the top female player in NCAA Division I soccer.

Howell becomes the fifth player to win the MAC Hermann Award in back-to-back season, joining Mia Hamm (UNC, 1992-93), Cindy Parlow (UNC, 1997-98), Christine Sinclair (Portland, 2004-05) and Morgan Brian (Virginia (2013-14).

She also earned Florida State’s third MAC Hermann Trophy, joining Mami Yamaguchi (2007) and herself from last season.

She started in 23 games while playing in all 25 for the Seminoles this season as their starting holding midfielder. She won her second national championship in December as she made her third appearance in the national championship game in four years.

The Lone Tree, Colorado native was named to the United Soccer Coaches All-Atlantic Region First Team and was named a United Soccer Coaches First Team All-American both for the second consecutive season. Howell was also named to the TopDrawerSoccer Best XI First team and was rated the No. 2 player in the country by TopDrawerSoccer in the end of season top-100.

Howell was named to the All-ACC First Team in the fall and the ACC’s Midfielder of the Year for the second straight season. She is the first student-athlete to earn the honor twice.

She also helped lead the Seminoles to their eighth ACC Tournament title. Howell capped off her senior season by helping lead Florida State to its third national title in soccer and the second during her four-year career at FSU.

The MAC Hermann Trophy, a 10-pound crystal soccer ball awarded annually since 1967, honors the United Soccer Coaches National Players of the Year in NCAA Division I men’s and women’s soccer based on voting conducted by NCAA Division I coaches.

An Amazon catalyst: Alabama developer buys Cross Creek Golf Course for redevelopment

An Alabama-based developer plans to redevelop the former Cross Creek Golf Course as a direct result of Amazon's robotics fulfillment center under construction on Mahan Drive. 

The $6.3-million transaction closed last week and includes five parcels spanning about 30 acres across from the Tallahassee Automobile Museum, said Brad Parker, a partner and broker at TLG Real Estate Services in Tallahassee. 

Parker and TLG broker Bryan Cureton represented the Seminole Boosters, who sold the property to Harbert Realty Services in Birmingham, Alabama. 

Built in 1990 by Tallahassee businessman DeVoe Moore, the 9-hole, par-3 course is located at 6701 Mahan Drive and closed in 2018, with the exception of hosting events.

Parker said Moore, a major donor to Florida State University and alumni, gifted the back portion of the golf course to the Seminole Boosters. He said the remaining portion of the course was donated to the Boosters by the family of Lucy Ho, another FSU donor and longtime restaurateur who opened Tallahassee's first Chinese restaurant.
