ACC TV ratings vs other P5 conferences

Great find by ACC Football RX.

HokieMark's conclusion is IMHO correct and has been for years.  There is much evidence for years that the ACC is consistently 3rd in P5 TV ratings.

Of course, the next issue is, why is it always last in TV payouts?

As for Orange Bowl vs Sugar Bowl in non-Semi-Final CFP years here is the relatively small data set so far:

2014-15 Orange - Georgia Tech/Mississippi State - 8.94M viewers
2016-17 Orange - Florida State/Michigan - 11.461M viewers
2017-18 Orange - Miami/Wisconsin - 11.727M viewers

2015-16 Sugar - Ole Miss/Oklahoma State - 8.940M viewers
2016-17 Sugar - Auburn/Oklahoma - 9.515M viewers

Cheers,
Neil

Syracuse fan and CSNBBS user "OrangeDude" has computed the average TV viewers for all 2017 football games by P5 conference, then further subdivided into 3 categories:
  • conference games (excluding games aired on ESPNU and FS2 since three other conferences have those type of games on their networks which are not metered)
  • games that come under the conference TV contract (excludes mirror games; includes conference games on ESPNU and FS2, OOC games at the conference's home arena, and neutral site games)
  • all games (including mirror games)*.

* NOTES:
- TV contract games excludes conference mirror games - 4 games total which involve the B12 in all 4, the ACC which participated in 3, and the PAC which was in 1; games played at a neutral site where the network airing the game made it difficult to determine which conference held the contract were included in both conferences totals.
- In "All Games", half of the total viewers for mirror games were assigned to each conference.
CONCLUSION: ACC TV viewers were a solid 3rd in all 3 categories, and actually a little closer to 2nd than they are to 4th. This really underscores just how underpaid the ACC is in terms of TV money. On the other hand, the Big Ten might be slightly overpaid.
