Florida State University’s deliberate efforts in marketing its graduate programs is paying off with a noticeable increase in applicants.
The university announced this week the number of applicants is up 11 percent over the nearly 8,800 received in 2012, a record high for the university.
The total number of applications — more than 9,700 — received this fall is a 26-percent increase over those received in fall 2017.
Earlier this year, U.S. News & World Report listed several FSU graduate programs among its ratings for public universities.
Sally McRorie, provost and senior vice president for academic affairs, attributes the increase to a concerted investment in recruiting graduate students to the university.
Leading the focus is the Graduate Enrollment Team, comprised of eight staff members, created in August 2017 with help from the provost’s office.
“They work with colleges, departments and programs across campus to help bring highly qualified graduate students to FSU — a very important component in meeting our strategic plan goals as well as our goal to reach the Top 25 among public universities,” McRorie said.
In the U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Colleges 2019” guidebook released this fall, FSU moved up seven spots to No. 26 among national public universities.
The new rankings show FSU has climbed 17 spots since placing No. 43 in 2016
Graduate programs with the largest numbers of students accepted this fall are Arts & Science, Social Work, Business, Communication & Information and Education.
In its 2019 “Best Graduate Schools” listing, U.S. News & World ranked the graduate program of College of Criminology and Criminal Justice No. 5 among public universities.
FSU’s part-time MBA program at the College of Business broke into the top 25 public universities nationwide.
Other gains were made by the colleges of law, nursing, education and the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering.

Applications for graduate education — and graduate student enrollment — at Florida State University are on the rise.

Application numbers are up 11 percent over the Graduate School’s record high of 8,749 applications in 2012. The total number of applications — more than 9,700 — received in Fall 2018 also represents a 26 percent increase over those submitted in Fall 2017. The number of graduate students enrolled at Florida State is also the highest it’s been since 2012.

FSU Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs Sally McRorie credits the work of the newly established Graduate Enrollment Team for much of the success.

“If you want to find an enthusiastic, highly focused team, take a look at our graduate enrollment staff,” McRorie said. “They work with colleges, departments and programs across campus to help bring highly qualified graduate students to FSU — a very important component in meeting our strategic plan goals as well as our goal to reach the Top 25 among public universities.”
