ACC football debate among FSU fans

Interesting debate.  Very strong opinions on both sides with the FSU fan base when it comes to the ACC. 

 

I think the ACC has improved, but unless 2-3 other teams make a PROGRAM jump (not a season, but a PROGRAM jump), the conference is still not deep enough.

 

I don't think there is a program in the ACC ready to make this jump.  Not yet.  I will be thrilled to be proven wrong.

You do realize that the ACC:

• was an abysmal 5-13 in BCS play with a winning percentage of .278;
• the ACC went 5-6 in Bowl play last season where four of the six losses were by double digits. Of the three wins, only one came against a power 5 conference team;
• the ACC has on'y won 6 NCs in football since 1953, of which 4 were won by non-original members (3 by FSU and 1 by GTech). The 2 NCs won by original ACC members were Maryland in 1953, now gone from the ACC, and Clemson in 1981);
• the SEC has won more NCs in football in a row at 7, than all of the NCs won by the ACC since its inception in 1953 at 6;
• no ACC team, other FSU, is ranked in the top 15 in five of the top pre-season polls this year (now there is ACC respect);
• VaTech has never ever beaten a team ranked 5 or higher when the game was played;
• last year, FSU thrashed overmatched ACC while coasting to the the national title game, only to beat Auburn by 3 to win a great game with a great comeback;
• lets not forget the West Virginia 70, Clemson 33 debacle in the Orange Bowl;
• according to Tommy Bowden: "I was in the ACC for 10 years and you hate to say it,but it [ACC] doesn't stack up [SEC]...All you can go by are statistics, and those are black and white. There's been a pattern of consistency. … In games of relevance and significance, the ACC has fallen short. … It's happened so many times that [the ACC] has lost its legitimacy."
• out of the last 43 games between Georgia and GTech, Georgia has won 33, times 33 TIMES!;
• South Carolina has beaten Clemson 5 years straight -who is Clemson's Daddy?; and
• the ACC had loss lost at least 35 straight games - that's right - 35 straight games against non-conference opponents ranked in the top 5, before last year.

I know, I know, stop with the ACC facts and history, it kills a good ACC-agenda spin story."

There are 3 other P5 conferences besides the SEC yet you only compare ACC to SEC
Conference payout 20.8 million ACC; 20.9 million SEC
ND, who UGA is wetting themselves over to have a 2 game series with, is going to be an ACC regular each season

The ACC lost 6 of 11 bowl games, one to Marshall.  Of the 11 bowl games, 8 were in the toilet bowl or less, but heck, the ACC had 11 bowl teams where winning is irrelevant.

An impressive body of work by the ACC members in 2013, wouldn't you agree?

I can see why you and Moz9 are raving over just how good the ACC is in football.

My personal favorite are the ACC losses to football powers ULM, Ball State, Marshall and twice, not once, to East Carolina.

Notwithstanding the above, I must admit, I did get a big laugh watching GTech try to play offense against Ole Miss in its Bowl game.  It was like watching comedy hour.

 

Given the ACC's past football performances in 2013 and ever since 1953, the year in which the ACC was still born in football, I can see now why you will feel that the ACC has been "snub" by the sports pundits by not naming one ACC team, not one, other than FSU, in their top 15 for the upcoming 2014 season.
