If Auburn gets 1910 and 1913 because the Billingsley Report — one of seven mathematics formulas that was used in the old BCS format — went back and retroactively claimed the Tigers were the national champs, then Florida State should go ahead and hang up that 1989 banner, right? Because Billingsley gave the Seminoles the title that year. FSU won 10 straight games to end that season, including a win over eventual national champ Miami, but finished second in the AP poll to the Hurricanes.
But our man Billingsley said, “Hell nah. That title belongs to the ‘Noles!” So, claim it, FSU! Like the Tigers did.
And while we’re at it: The Rothman (FACT) poll awarded Florida State the 1980 national championship. That is also in the NCAA Record Book. The Berryman QRPS Massey poll (what a name!) awarded FSU the 1987 national championship. The Sagarin Ratings, which were also used by Auburn in determining its new titles, gave FSU the 1992 national championship.
The Dunkel System awarded the Seminoles the championship in 1994, and the Alderson System (which is so close to being the Alderan System for all my Star Wars nerds out there!) gave Florida State the title in 1996.
Add all those up, folks: That’s SIX more national championships for your Seminoles. Six! All in the NCAA Record Book. And they are just as legitimate as the ones Auburn claimed this week. And absolutely more legitimate than any titles won before World War II anyway.
Auburn now “officially” claims 9 national championships
FSU has 9 also
Fact in 1980
Berryman 1987
Billingsly 1989
Safaris 1992
Dunkel 1994
Anderson 1996
Plus the 3 outright nc’a of 93,99 and 13
I think some poll had fsu #1 in 2014 also. So it could be 10
