Bowl Payouts 2015-16 - ACC $23.08 Million; SEC $62.99 Million

This year the ACC will receive about $23.08 million in bowl payouts.

In comparison, the SEC will earn about $62.99 million in bowl payouts.

Beside the fact that the ACC had 9 teams and the SEC had 10 teams, one difference is that the Sugar Bowl paid out $80 million ($40 million to SEC and $40 million to the Big 12) this year and, because the Orange Bowl was one of the playoff bowls, the ACC received zero revenue from the Orange Bowl, but instead did receive $6 million playoff money.

Bowl Payouts 2015-16
BIG received $65.24 million
SEC received $62.99 million
Big 12 received $59.86 million
Pac 12 received $57.92 million
ACC received $23.08 million

BTW, as I understand, each of the four teams that make the playoffs receive the same amount of money, i.e., $6 million; but there’s no additional payout for making the championship game, meaning that Alabama and Clemson game will have no direct impact on the income of the SEC and ACC, respectively, for playing in the championship game. What’s more, there’s not even an extra bonus for winning the game, so a victory for either team tonight will do nothing to bump up that $6 million conference play-off bonus.

Thus, rooting for Clemson or Alabama to win tonight will not result in more money to either conference.

Last year the ACC had the Orange Bowl contract payout of $27.5 million. This year, the ACC did nit because one of the CFP games was held in the Orange Bowl.

The problem lies 2-fold - the ACC is in smaller or secondary payout bowls and the Orange Bowl, when played, pays out $55 million, not $80 million like the Sugar Bowl and the Rose Bowl.

Thus, the ACC will always be short of the other P4 conferences in Bowl payout except in the year that the a CFP venue is in the Rose Bowl or Sugar Bowl, and not in the Orange Bowl.

Problem 1: Deficit of $12.5M for contract bowl vs. all other Power 5 conferences

Problem 2: Our lack of dance partner in the Orange Bowl gives 2 of the other 4 conferences the opportunity to make an extra $27.5M 2 out of every 3 years, further holding us back from whichever conference earns that extra payout.

Problem 3: Based on the payouts in the OP, I calculated the average payouts from all the other bowls.

As expected, lowest. It would be expected that with the more teams you have going to bowls, the lower the average. Still, the SEC and Pac 12 have MORE teams in the other bowls, yet still have a higher average. The Big 12 earned more from the remaining bowls, with 3 less teams. Its sad that a team on the cusp of a playoff spot (while justifiably overlooked for a NY6 bowl) falls to the Russell Athletic Bowl which is like December 29th. How do we not have a single tie in with the Gator, Citrus, Outback? Those three are all in the top 8 payouts (outside CFP, Contract, and NY6). All three are SEC/B1G matchups. Crap, the Citrus bowl pays out more than a NY6. The ACC's best payout after above: Music City at 2.75M. Best all other bowl for 4 other conferences: No less than 3.825M.

Bottom line is that the ACC failed in every facet of bowl agreements, except the flat $50M that each P5 conference gets from the CFP. While that is the biggest portion of the payout, it still puts the ACC at a measurable distance behind the other P5 Conferences.

When the ACC Champ plays in the Orange Bowl when it is not a semi-final game...the league gets 27 mil dollars per year

When the other four leagues send their teams to the Rose and Sugar Bowl when those bowls are not semi-final games
each of those leagues gets 40 mil dollars. 8 of the 12 years of the length of the contract those bowls will not be semi-final
games.

Thus for the 8 years that those bowls will have their contracted conf playing in them...

ACC will earn 216 mil dollars
SEC will earn 320 mil dollars
Big10 will earn 320 mil dollars
Big12 will earn 320 mil dollars
Pac12 will earn 320 mil dollars

In addition the Big`10 and the SEC each get to play in the Orange Bowl (when it's not a semi-final game) 3 times at 13.6 mil per time

Which bumps the earnings of the Big10 and SEC up to 360.8 mil dollars for the life of the contract.

Notre Dame gets to appear 2 times in the Orange Bowl, as the visiting team for 6.8 mil per time and they get to pocket every dime of money earned when they are in the
playoffs or in the Orange and Fiesta Bowls.

The Iranian Nuke deal was better. At least they lie about it...this thing is out in the open for everybody to see.

Forget about the TV money and the SEC network and all those other New Year's day bowls the SEC plays in, along with ther attendance, booster clubs, all their scholarships endowed and all their other money making endeavors forget about those disparities...Just off of 2 bowl games the SEC and the Big10 will each
profit more than 144 mil more dollars than the ACC for the 12 years of the contract.
