So FSU had a buyout for Taggart that was in the top 6-10. Insane.

http://www.theterritory.org/phorum/read.php?5,729206,729318#msg-729318

Just to put this all in perspective, FSU because of the former AD's blatant desire to encourage diversity in hiring, and because apparently that same former AD did not prepare at all for Jimbo leaving even though Jimbo and his money hungry agent almost left the two previous years, was left in a bad position when Jimbo left and ended up with Willie and his extremely deadly Lethal Simplicity offense.

I was for the hire for the record.

It turned out to be a distater competitively and financially.

FSU, and all the other ACC schools, are well behind the Big-10 and SEC to begin with.

So, we make the bold move to buy Willie out, while the current AD is bringing financial order to FSU's athletic department, and now we are so in need of cash to lure the next coach we are sending out emails to the Boosters, much to the delight of our rivals, who are really enjoying all this, so that we can hopefully pay for all the things we need.

And, on top if it all, Willie didn't even have an offense. He didn't even understand football. Great. Just great.

All I can say is I hope what I heard is not true. But, here is the thing. All that SEC money dervies from how many and how rabid their fans are about their product. Are they arrogant? Yup. And proud of it. And all that leads to huge stadiums and huge TV ratings and huge turnouts to everything the SEC does. Now imagine if ABC/ESPN actually controlled all the rights to the SEC's games and shared none of them with CBS.

You think ABC/ESPN slobbers all over the SEC now? Dear God what is going to happen when they are promoting their own games if they get those rights? Meanwhile, the ACC has trouble putting butts in seats and offers a few yawn worthy matchups each year and is usually out of the running for anything interesting like the NC very early except for Clemson.

This isn't going to change anytime soon. The SEC footprint got more terrifying once they added TXAM, and they aren't even that good yet, but eventually someone will turn them around. It is really hard to see any scenario where the SEC is not by far the king of college football money wise by a huge margin for the next 100 years or more. And I am as die hard an ACC football fan as there is and even I know we are in a real bad spot. I believe the author is right and that the SEC's rights are worth a good 4 or 5 times what they are currently getting.

I do not think any other conference can say that and more than likely we will get a pay cut in the next contract not an increase.

So I worked with John many a day at the Capitol in the roles of which you reference.

All of that experience and he still hired Willie and locked FSU into a crazy buyout based on Willie’s resume.

I’m not naive enough not to understand all of the good that John has done for us and I’m a fan of President Thrasher.

I want his legacy to be the 18th ranking, the $100 million entrepreneur school endowment AND the hire of this next football coach.

If not, he will be remembered by most, for the Willie debacle and the $50 million plus it will end up costing this school.

it’s ok to disagree with my opinion but I believe that I am right.

Sweet justice too: https://www.usnews.com/best-colleges/rankings/national-universities/top-public

Leaves us for PSU and FSU just surpasses PSU for public university’s.

.............

You mean like hiring Waldo? Or pissing off the BIG12 without using the leverage they could give us to get concessions from the ACC? Signing the GOR? The fool who has us perpetually in 3rd or 4th place in P5 income? That first class bonehead?

Here is a list of a few things that went wrong:
  • Sept 19, 2013 AD Wilcox and Interim FSU President Stokes suspended Jameis Winston an entire game for foul language in a public place on late Friday night before playing a home game against Clemson. Wilcox was no where to be found after the joint press release of the suspension. This left Coach Fisher to have to tell Winston and deal w the media of the suspension. This was just one month into the job for Where's Waldo
  • Did not work well w Jimbo at all so much so that Jimbo went over Wilcox head many times to visit w Thrasher instead
  • Hired Willie Taggart in 4 days wo vetting him and hiring a search committee to find the correct head coaching candidate

Under AD Wilcox watch some Positives:
  • FSU Football National Champs 2013 and final four 2014
  • FSU Softball National Champs 2018
  • FSU Woman's Soccer National Champs 2014 and 2018; Runner Up 2013
  • FSU Beach Volleyball Runner Up 2016 and 2018
(There may be more accomplishments but hard to find data)

.............
The athletic department was so poorly run under him that they couldn’t even plan a proper National Championship celebration. IIRC, the celebration happened a full month after the game when all of the excitement had worn off. Was still a fun event, but should have been way more exciting.
............
He had been the AD for about 5 months when we won the title, including the entire 2013 season. How was screwing up the celebration not his fault? By all accounts he let the entire athletic department slack off before and after the title game.
.................
He was pushed out of Duke (for reasons that have never been released) and Swofford basically said to Barron he will become your AD so he did, Thrasher had to deal with him, FSU & the Fan Base had to deal with the Taggart experiment and now with Coburn & Suguiyama running the show we all wait on pins and needles to see who the new Captain of the ship will be......
...............
Stan Wilcox was completely over his head. He was a compliance officer in Duke's Athletic Department. Had 0 experience running anything. It was apparent he was over his head quite early on and the administration was afraid to fire him. The final nails in his coffin were Willie and the botched proposal for a football only indoor facility. The Taggart fiasco speaks for itself. The facility proposal was the final straw. Stan was supposed to present some proposals to the board regarding the new football only practice facility. Stan presented the board with a 3 page proposal for a cost of $120mm.
The proposal was pathetic and embarrassing. At that moment, one of the board members said he could get the facility done for $60mm. (Later gave the board a professionally done proposal) After that meeting, the board new they had to get rid of Stan. Stan tried to get AD jobs around the country for months before and after the meeting. He could not even sniff an offer. So he goes to work for the NCAA.
..............
90% of FSU's Director Cup success is Dave Hart. Here are his hires:

Sue Semrau (Women's bball)
Dwayne Hultquist (Tennis)
Leonard Hamilton (Bball)
Bob Braman (T&F) - Won multiple National Titles
Trey Jones (Golf)
Jennifer Hyde (Tennis)
Mark Kirkorian (Soccer) - Won multiple National Titles
Jimbo Fisher (Football) - Won national Title

Who knows at this point. If Stoops is actually out and he probably is at this point then it is arguably the largest blunder we've seen from FSU athletics.

I just can't imagine how they thought it was a good idea to imply we had Stoops locked up when we did not, let that rumor run wild for over a week and then telling the TDO that he's "not a candidate" and letting the rumor remain out there. If he's out you say he will not be the coach. There is no reason to let it hang out there. It's not leverage over other candidates because it was very clear he was the number 1 option. If we're in serious talks with another candidate it's because Stoops is out. They'll realize that.

I heard from so many people that they would become a booster or increase their donations if we got Bob. I doubt those people are going to contribute to what is largely going to be seen as a very large let down.
