FSU #2 in Capital One Cup

https://www.tallahassee.com/story/sports/college/fsu/2019/01/17/florida-state-women-capital-one-cup-fsu-soccer-national-championship-softball-track-beach-volleyball/2604341002/

With fall sports wrapped up, winter well underway and spring sports not far off, Florida State has positioned itself well in the Capital One Cup standings on the women's athletics side.
The Seminoles have amassed 60 points in the standings, putting them in second place behind only Stanford (96 points).
The Capital One Cup, given out annually to the best men's and women's college athletics programs, awards points for Top-10 finishes in all sports.
All 60 of FSU's current points come from the soccer team's national championship, the second in program history.
While FSU's volleyball and cross country teams failed to add any more points, more could be coming from a number of teams over the remainder of the school year.
Since the trophy was introduced for the 2010-11 season, FSU has never finished better than fourth or had more than 93 points.
Fittingly, FSU may break both those marks this year while they are celebrating 50 years of intercollegiate women's athletics.
The FSU men's programs have not yet scored a point in this year's Capital One Cup.

Dance students at Florida State get to practice their craft at the newly-renovated, magnificent Montgomery Hall. This facility houses the internationally recognized Maggie Allesee National Center for Choreography (MANCC), a dance and choreographic research center that forms a creative community for the development of new work. If you’ve got moves and rhythm for days, check out the MANCC choreographic fellowship to gain recognition and awesome resources for your creative research. To help with that research, students can access everything from a costume shop and conditioning studio to centers for music and technology with media labs and a recording studio.
Show the world that you know how to move when you dance on foreign soil with the Dance in Paris or Dance in Valencia study abroad programs. While there, you’ll continue to study the core emphasis of performance and choreography for university credit. But if you’re too scared to fly over the ocean, stay in Tallahassee for rhythmic and movement analysis courses. “The rigor in the dance classes are instructed by top professionals in the field that understand the importance of stamina, strength, quality, performance and flexibility needed to endure the demands of high-level dance,” said Assistant Professor of Dance Caleb Mitchell. And if you stay another year, you can earn your M.A. in dance with the Five-Year Combined Degree program.

Title games ranked (update)

Always felt 2013 was underranked.

https://accfootballrx.blogspot.com/2019/01/ranking-national-champs-2004-2019.html

From USAToday - Ranking the last 15 national champions in college football by Paul Myerberg
It wasn't long after Clemson put the finishing touches on Monday night's 44-16 win against Alabama that coaches and players began to discuss the Tigers' place in history. "I feel like we’re the best team ever," said Clemson defensive end Clelin Ferrell.
Clemson is at least unique, as the first on college football's highest level since Pennsylvania in 1897 to finish 15-0. In doing so, the Tigers upended a rival that for much of the regular season had been viewed in comparison to some of the top teams in program history...
Here's their top 10, including their comments on 3 ACC champions who made that list...

1. 2018 Clemson (15-0)
It's noteworthy when you achieve markers that hadn't been matched since the 19th century. Clemson had the nation's best defense, the third-best offense and the most consistent week-to-week performances of any team in college football. At the very least, the Tigers earned a place in the best-ever conversation.

2. 2013 Florida State (14-0)
The Jameis Winston-led Seminoles cruised through the regular season with an average margin of victory of 42 points — or six touchdowns, which sounds even more impressive. It was a closer call in the championship game against Auburn, but this was a powerhouse team.

3. 2004 Southern California (13-0)

4. 2008 Florida (13-1)

5. 2005 Texas (13-0)

6. 2011 Alabama (12-1)

7. 2012 Alabama (13-1)

8. 2015 Alabama (14-1)

9. 2016 Clemson (14-1)
Clemson's shutout of Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl and memorable win against Alabama in the championship game are the defining moments from the program's first title in 25 years. There were a few close calls during the regular season, including Louisville, North Carolina State and Florida State, and a loss to Pittsburgh in November. But this veteran team knew what it needed to do in order to reach the playoff and saved its best for last.

10. 2009 Alabama (14-0)

BOTTOM LINE: I'll certainly take the top 2 - especially considering they were both in the last 6 years. That's CRAZY good! Gives #GoACC a whole new meaning, doesn't it?

Football modern day statistics

https://csnbbs.com/thread-867977.html

Since I wanted to do this for both football and men's basketball I started with basketball. In my mind I thought modern era could easily be defined as several things, when the NCAA tourney first had the 3 point shot, when the NCAA tourney first used a shot clock, when the NCAA tourney first expanded to 64, or the earliest being when the NCAA tourney expanded to 32 teams, which was the 1974-75 season.

In terms of football it was harder to do. My only thought was the point at which the beginning of Division 1-A and Division 1-AA which was 1978. Since I didn't want to have different starting points for both sports and since the 1974-75 season was the first year AP and UPI gave their Final Top 25 lists after bowl games, I decided 1974-75 will be the starting point for my definition of the "modern era" of college athletics. You may disagree, of course, and I am open to other thoughts as to why a different year would be better but the data I mined began with that starting point.

In the "Modern Era" (which the 2018-19 year marks the 45th year) there have been 51 National Champions in football with six of the years having split champions.

Alabama - 8
Miami - 5
Oklahoma - 4
Southern Cal - 4
Clemson - 3
Florida - 3
Florida State - 3
Nebraska - 3
LSU - 2
Notre Dame - 2
Ohio State - 2
Penn State - 2

The following each won 1 NC in the modern era: Auburn, BYU, Colorado, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Michigan, Pittsburgh, Tennessee, Texas, and Washington.

In the "Modern Era" of football the number of times a program has finished the season as a Top 4 team with the caveat that all BCS championship runner-ups and CFP semi-finalists are considered to be Top 4 regardless of where the AP final poll ranks them. Prior to the BCS NC games, the AP final poll is being used.

Florida State - 15
Oklahoma - 14
Alabama - 13
Ohio State 12
Miami - 11
USC - 11
Florida - 8
Nebraska - 8
Penn State - 8
Notre Dame - 7
Georgia - 6
Michigan - 6
Auburn - 5
Clemson - 5
Oregon - 5
Texas - 5
LSU - 4
Tennessee - 4
Washington - 4

The following programs finished in the Top 4 three times or less in the modern era: Arizona State (3), Colorado (3), Pittsburgh (3), Michigan State (2), Utah (2), Arizona, Arkansas, Boise, BYU, Georgia Tech, Houston, Missouri, Okla. State, Oregon State, South Carolina, SMU, Stanford, Syracuse, TCU, Virginia Tech, and Wisconsin.

Make of the data what you will, but for me I know I am rethinking which programs truly have been "elite" using this definition of the modern era as well as how they stack up against each other and who may be considered "elite" historically, but in terms of the modern era, may simply not be anymore.

Cheers,
Neil
