Every helmet worn by FSU

Most of the following information as to the dates of use of these various FSU helmets is summarized from information found at the "Helmet Hut" web site (www.helmethut.com).

The one "missing" helmet design is the one used by FSU during its first two games in 1969 (vs Wichita State and vs Miami (FL)); during these two games, FSU used gold helmets with a version of the "100" logo that many teams used that year to commemorate the college football centennial. I have seen no color photographs of this helmet, but the "Helmet Hut" web site reports that the football-shape was blue in color. I would appreciate any color photographs from the game.

*1 In 1962, plain gold helmets were used only during the first two games (vs The Citadel and Kentucky).

*2 Beginning with the team's third game in 1962, FSU introduced a triple helmet design scheme. On their helmets the offensive unit wore an arrow logo, the defensive unit a tomahawk, and the multi-purpose players an "indian head". This scheme was in place until the end of the 1962 season.

*3 While this design was apparently in use for most of the 1964 season, the team used plain gold helmets (like the first helmet shown above) during at least the game against Georgia in 1964.

*4 This design was used only during the inaugural Peach Bowl game in Atlanta, GA, which was a 31-27 loss to LSU.

*5 This design was used during games against Texas Tech and Utah State at the beginning of the 1975 season.

*7 I have only one photograph - showing only one FSU helmet - from the 1975 FSU game against Memphis State; in this photograph, the FSU helmet lacks any stripes. I would appreciate additional photographs from this game to confirm whether or not the entire team was using stripeless helmets during this game - if so, this would "count" as an additional historical helmet design for FSU.

*8 Black helmets were worn during the 2009 home game against Maryland in order to "[pay] tribute to Osceola, the legendary Native American warrior whose leadership of the Seminoles during the Second Seminole War has made him an enduring symbol of the unconquered spirit that Florida State athletes seek to embody".

NSF grant funds new 40T superconducting magnet design at FSU-headquartered MagLab


A new $15.8 million grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) will produce a detailed design for the world’s most powerful superconducting magnet at the Florida State University-headquartered National High Magnetic Field Laboratory.

While the National MagLab is already home to more than a dozen world-record magnets used by researchers from around the world, the future 40-tesla magnet will advance the study of quantum matter with its low-noise environment that surpasses present-day resistive and hybrid magnets.

“This project is a fantastic example of how science works on the edge of our understanding: engineers will design a new instrument that has never been built before that holds the promise to become a state-of the-art tool for physicists to answer outstanding research questions about the mysteries of quantum materials,” said MagLab Director Greg Boebinger. “Our user community is excited about the virtually limitless time at peak field and low noise environment this future magnet, once constructed, would provide to advance their research goals.”

The design for a new 40T magnet will call for the use of cutting-edge materials known as high-temperature superconductors (HTS), which allow a near perfect flow of electrons at higher temperatures than their earlier low-temperature counterparts. To put this magnet design in perspective, a typical refrigerator magnet has a field of about .01T and low-temperature superconductors have a maximum field of 25T.

Dozens of researchers within the lab’s Magnet Science and Technology department and Applied Superconductivity Center will bring their unique expertise in materials research, magnet design and technology development to this new project. The MagLab’s demonstrated successes in magnet research and development include two recent breakthroughs in HTS technology: a 32-tesla all-superconducting magnet that was designed, built and reached full field at the MagLab in December 2017 and a 14.5 tesla test coil that reached a world record 45.5-tesla field strength inside a 31-tesla resistive magnet.

“Magnets are only as good as the materials and technologies in which they are built,” said Mark Bird, director of the Magnet Science and Technology division at the National MagLab. “A magnet like this can only be achieved at the National MagLab where we are leading a revolution in understanding and leveraging high-temperature superconductors.”

For the final design, MagLab scientists and engineers are considering two different magnet technologies using the high-temperature superconductor known as “rare earth barium copper oxide” or REBCO.  The two design strategies take different approaches to address inconsistency in the performance of the REBCO tape. One design uses multiple REBCO tapes in parallel, while the other involves applying a resistive insulation to the tape. The team will develop test coils to advance our understanding of screening currents, stress, and quench protection —each one a component of the myriad technical arcana that must be mastered for the future magnet to be successful.

After additional testing and characterization work, MagLab engineers will complete a final design that will describe in complete detail how a 40T superconducting magnet should be constructed, including the cost and schedule for construction.

“The National High Magnetic Field Laboratory’s extraordinary work over the past few decades is evident from the fact that they continue to attract support from the National Science Foundation and others to take us even further in magnet development,” said Interim Vice President for Research Laurel Fulkerson. “We are proud of the work they have already done and will continue to do as they develop a design for the 40T magnet.”

The grant funds design work through 2026 and is part of the NSF’s Mid-scale Research Infrastructure 1 Program (Mid-scale RI-1), special funding that supports the design efforts for compelling projects that meet a scientific need and enable US researchers to remain competitive in a global research environment.

“U.S. researchers need cutting-edge tools to stay at the forefront of science and technology,” said NSF Director Sethuraman Panchanathan. “NSF is committed to filling this mid-scale space in the American scientific research infrastructure by investing in research facilities and instrumentation that advance next-generation discoveries.”

Success at this stage will lay the groundwork for a future proposal that, if successful, would fund the construction of the 40T magnet and is an important stepping-stone on the route to a future 60T hybrid magnet, one of the most challenging future magnets proposed in national reports on high magnetic field science.

FSU ranks among top colleges for free expression

Florida State University placed No. 5 in the 2021 College Free Speech Rankings published by the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) Tuesday. FSU is the highest-rated university from the state of Florida on the list.

FIRE, a national campus free speech organization, used seven components to identify the best campuses for student free speech and open inquiry among 159 of America’s most prestigious colleges. The top-ranked colleges have the highest average score among all students surveyed and have the most open environments for free speech.

“This ranking is a testament to Florida State University’s enduring commitment to foster a respectful and civil environment where students can freely discuss and exchange different beliefs and opinions,” said Amy Hecht, vice president for Student Affairs. “We’re pleased that our efforts to protect every individual’s right to free speech and expression have been recognized by FIRE.”

FIRE surveyed 37,104 college students currently enrolled in four-year degree programs at 159 colleges and universities in the United States. Students answered a survey of 25 items about their experience and attitudes about free speech and expression on their college campuses. Students also answered an open-ended question about their experiences.

The college rankings are based on a composite score of seven sub-components: Openness, Tolerance for Conservative Speakers, Tolerance for Liberal Speakers, Administrative Support for Free Speech, Comfort Expressing Ideas, Disruptive Conduct, and FIRE’s Speech Code Rating.

Last year, FSU revised its policies on free expression to earn FIRE’s top free speech — or “green light” — rating.

Florida State University may build its own hotel in Tallahassee



With a hospitality college ranked seventh nationally and academic and sporting programs that bring 75,000 visitors annually to the city, Florida State University is moving forward with plans to add an “academic” hotel to its campus inventory.

The university’s Board of Trustees voted by consent last week to approve a request to include a hotel site in FSU’s master plan, which was delayed last year due to COVID planning and could take 12 months to finalize.

Approval by trustees was needed because it involves an amendment to the master plan, which serves as a blueprint for campus properties and future development.

The move also keeps alive the university’s vision to create an Arena District, expanding its footprint from downtown Tallahassee to the main campus.

“Adding an academic hotel to FSU’s operational program will allow Dedman to expand its academic offerings around hotel operations and continue to aspire higher in hospitality education,” Clark said. He noted FSU, in a typical year, “generates well over 75,000 room nights.”

FSU has been aiming to build arena district

For the past few years, FSU has been in discussions with city and county commissioners sitting as the Blueprint Intergovernmental Agency about its vision to create an arena district connecting FSU's campus to the Tucker Civic Center, of which it took ownership in 2012.

The district would consist of a convention center, a hotel, and the new location for the FSU College of Business. The university and Blueprint are still in discussions on the convention center and a formal memorandum of understanding has not been approved.

Despite that, the Blueprint agency last March committed $40 million to build the convention center, upping its original proposal by $20 million.

The plan involved Blueprint funding the design and construction of the convention center with FSU maintaining it moving forward.

But in September the Blueprint panel tapped into that bank and recommitted $10 million of that money to Florida A&M University to pay the majority costs for renovations at Bragg Memorial Stadium.

The hotel will be a public-private partnership between FSU and Development Ventures Group, Inc, (DEVEN). That partnership scenario calls for the developer partner to provide the financing and assume the risks of the project, Graham said.

DEVEN developed the $260 million Knight’s Plaza project in a public-private partnership with the University of Central Florida, according to its website. It also developed The Celeste Hotel at the entrance to UCF in partnership with Demetree Global and Pinnacle Hotel Management.

The hotel will be located on the northern side of the surface parking directly between the Turnbull Conference Center and the Tucker Civic Center.

“The hotel plan wasn’t approved (by trustees). What was approved was allowing a hotel to be constructed on university property,” Graham said. “This is the first step.”
