Top 20 Avg S&P Since 1983, etc

 I do think FSU, Miami, and Va Tech have fallen behind and if it weren't for Clemson, the ACC would be panicked right now.

 These football schools HAVE to fix things and fast.  Can't count on 1 team.

Why 1983? That's the year the Supreme Court took the cuffs off college football and allowed it to sell tv rights to the highest bidder - which, in turned, funded an explosion of growth for the sport. Notice this tweet by Bill Connelly:

 If you know much about Bill, you know he's the king of S&P - a type of mathematical power rating which is an excellent way to compare teams, especially over the long view like this. So basically he's telling us that the ACC has the #1 team of the past 36 years, the #4 team, plus 2 more full-time and one part-time conference mates in the top 20...

1. Florida State
4. Miami
10. Notre Dame
18. Clemson
19. Virginia Tech

These same teams keep popping up over and over as the backbone of ACC football.

I recently read something posted by an SEC fan stating that the future of college football would come down to the SEC and the Big Ten - and that the ACC would fail because it doesn't have enough marquee teams. If anything, this seems to indicate that the ACC already has more marquee teams than the B1G and is nipping at the heels of the SEC!

SEC: 7
ACC/ND: 5
B1G: 4
XII: 2
Pac: 2

Now, if you want to question the future of the Big XII or the Pac-12, go right ahead. In my opinion, the only hope for those conferences would involve a merger (or at the very least, a scheduling agreement).

However, as long as the big 4 of ACC football (Clemson, FSU, Miami and Virginia Tech) can perform at a high-enough level to remain nationally relevant, the ACC has a chance. Then, if some former greats like Georgia Tech, Pitt and Syracuse can return to glory - watch out SEC!
