COMMENTS: The highest conference average is, of course, the SEC (at just over $133M per school). However, this time there were two ACC teams which reported more than the SEC average - Florida State and Louisville. In the case of FSU, the Noles are likely including Jimbo Fisher's buyout money as a one-time revenue (approx. $ 7M). Still very impressive.
On the other end of the spectrum, to understand what a financial drag on the conference Wake Forest has become, consider this: the average revenue with the Deacons included is $101.6M, but without them it jumps to $103.9M - a difference of $2.3M just by removing the bottom school! Wake is, in fact, 65th out of 65 power conference teams (including Notre Dame).

Neil, FSU had 38 million in unspecified revenue. I believe 32 million of that was the buyout on Jimbo Fisher. He announced in Dec of '17, but I think the money may have transferred the end of June. That's my best guess and I'm not swearing it is Gospel.
I thought Fisher only had to pay around $6-$7 million to buyout his contract. I think the person who threw out $32M was thinking of what FSU would've had to pay to fire him (but that's not what actually happened).
ReplyDeleteGood point. Thanks for that catch. I always take revenue numbers with a grain of salt. One reason, for example, ACC teams see FSU's numbers and think "you guys are rich, why are you complaining?" They ignore 2 HUGE points. 1) Competing in football at a national title level (which FSU tries to do, but sometimes fails, like they are currently), is the most expensive price tag, by a mile. 2) Having a top 15 athletic program (something Clemson abandoned), is the 2nd most expensive price tag, by a mile. FSU is the only school that strives for both of those....their revenue needs are WAY beyond the average ACC school.....even Clemson's, because of this.
DeleteYep, totally understand. Kudos to someone at FSU for getting into the top 5 in revenue - even if it's only one or two years every decade - still impressive considering how strong the competition is!
