As Warchant first reported back in March, FSU athletics actually suffered a $1.8 million loss for the 2015-16 cycle due to several factors. According to FSU officials this was only an "on paper" loss that won't carry over to the next cycle.
The difference here is The Advocate's figures are based on "football" budgets, not overall athletics. We'll see if we can get a detailed breakdown of FSU football only financial figures for 2015-16 so we can compare.
I saw a post showing athletic revenues and expenditures. These things are always tricky, but according to that we were 18th nationally and would have been 11th in the SEC, just behind USCe.

Seems like funny math to me.
ReplyDeleteAvoiding to ope.ed.gov/athletics, Tennessee had $136m revenue last year, total. Tennessee claims 107 in football revenue and 28 in expenses (which assigns pretty closely with the advocates figures). They claim 23 in revenue from both basketball programs. That leaves just a $5m difference from their claimed 135m total athletics revenue.
On that site, FSU lists $56m football revenue and 19 combined from both basketballs. That's only 75m out of FSU's reported 123 in total revenue.
It's nothing more than different accounting practices. Football expenses/revenues are meaningless. The only thing that is largely standardized from one school to the next is total revenue and expenses.
