We’re less than four months away from Florida State opening its 2017 season against Alabama in a highly-anticipated contest between the ACC and SEC.
Against the SEC under head coach Jimbo Fisher, the Seminoles are 9-1. While that trend has been well documented and espoused among the FSU faithful, we take a further look at how the Seminoles have historically fared against Power 5 conferences under their current make-up.
For example, although all six of FSU’s wins over Nebraska came while the Cornhuskers were in the Big 8, they’re currently a Big Ten, so they’ll be counted as such. Vacated wins won’t count against FSU or its opponents. Without further ado, here’s a look at Florida State’s record against each Power 5 conference as they currently exist:
ACC (226-99-4)
Florida State has been a member of the ACC since 1992 and its success in the conference has been well documented. The Seminoles won the ACC in each of their first nine years in the conference and in 12 of their first 14. The team that the Seminoles have fared the best against in the ACC is Duke at 19-0. Miami is the only team currently in the ACC that FSU holds a losing record against all-time, but that could change after this season as it sits 31-30 in favor of the Hurricanes.
Big Ten (38-6-1)
Much of this domination has to do with FSU owning Maryland during its time in the ACC as the Seminoles hold an all-time 22-2 edge over the Terrapins. The mark is also skewed by a 6-2 record against Nebraska, which didn’t join the conference until 2011. Even against the traditional Big Ten powers however, FSU fares pretty well. The Seminoles are 2-1 against Michigan, 3-0 against Ohio State, 2-0 against Michigan State and 1-0 against Wisconsin. FSU has never played five of the seven teams that make up the Big Ten West.
Big 12 (23-15)
The Big 12 team that has given Florida State the most fits historically is without a doubt, Oklahoma. The Sooners are 6-1 against the Seminoles and defeated them twice for the national championship. The only other current Big 12 team that FSU has a losing record against is TCU and Baylor at 1-2 each, but the Seminoles haven’t met either since 1973. The only Big 12 the Seminoles have never faced is Texas.
Pac-12 (9-2)
The sample size against the Pac-12 is pretty small for Florida State with three of the victories coming over Colorado when it was a Big 12 member. FSU took a home-and-home against USC in 1997 and 1998. The only two losses came in bowls. FSU lost to Arizona State in the 1971 Sun Bowl and Oregon in the Rose Bowl following the 2014 season.
SEC (72-68-4)
The conference that Florida State has the worst record against is the SEC, but it’s still a winning one. The team FSU has met most is rival Florida, who it has a 25-34-2 record against all-time. The team with the highest winning percentage against FSU from the SEC is Auburn at 13-5-1. The team the Seminoles have beat up most from the SEC is South Carolina, against whom they are 16-3. FSU is also 4-0 against Texas A&M, although all meetings came prior to the Aggies joining the ACC. The Seminoles are 7-2 against LSU.
