Tom Jenkins DSO

Capital Campaign is in 'dark phase'
Added some properties on College and Copeland (working to better define campus borders)
Work towards South West Campus Master plan has continued:  Alumni Village has been torn down.  900 acres free between stadium and the airport.
Boosters already over $300 Million goal
Here is why the above is somewhat concerning:

FSU is struggling with academic donations.
No Trustee questions for the DSO VP

Dr Kistner VP academic affairs
Top 15 of public universities in 4 year grad rate (65%)
Focus on 15 hours per semester moving forward per student
Performance funding 68 points last year, 81 points this year.  Great improvement

Gov Advocacy
State asked univ. to be 'bold', no coherent mention of FSU's response to this 'be bold' request.
Not sure what FSU is pushing for that is 'bold.'  Some talk of riding UF's coattails. Simply can seem to follow FSU's game plan.  No discussion of expanded prof. programs, expanded missions (COM), etc?
Corvelias Matching funding for FSU is about $14 Million (if state funds)

Inst. Research
Increase in research proposals
Fed awards up
IRCB (research) building is almost planned.  Funding not there yet.

Student affairs
Student Union phase 1-just renderings now.

Finance
FSU received $79 Million of $500 Million (out of 11 or 12 schools) for 2016/17.  Very high percentage. Great job by FSU.
New Coke contract 10 year $31 Million.  Includes internship ops for students and hiring opp.  Great contract.
Sodexho investing $40 million in facilities.

"FSU established the Seminole 100, which will recognize the top 100 fastest-growing businesses in America owned by Florida State University alumni. Important work is being done on FSU’s campus and throughout the state to educate students on how to become leading entrepreneurs. Seminole 100 will allow us to see the results of that rigorous academic environment, and it will stand as a lasting tribute to the entrepreneurial legacy of FSU"

"FSU continues to partner with Domi Station to help FSU entrepreneurs with an idea or early stage product get the tools and guidance needed to get off the ground, interact with the community, and engage with successful business leaders. Since its grand opening, Domi Station has co-sponsored student events, which brings together software and hardware engineers, designers, and students to create team projects from scratch. Domi also hosts the weekly 1 Million Cups meeting of Tallahassee entrepreneurs, which welcomes FSU student pitches, and maintains work space in their headquarters specifically for FSU students. "

"To foster cross-disciplinary research and student/postdoctoral fellow mentorship, infrastructure must be in place to support these activities. During the reporting period, the final stages of design of two major buildings at FSU were underway. The Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Science (EOAS) Building will be a 135,500 sf building constructed on the main campus. It will house the EOAS Department and contain teaching facilities, offices as well as general and specialized research labs. The EAOS Building will allow faculty in this department, who heretofore have been housed in four separate buildings, to be colocalized thereby facilitating collaborative efforts.
A second building, the Interdisciplinary Research and Commercialization Building (IRCB), is being planned for the southwest campus, leveraging the agencies of such entities as the Mag Lab, High Performance Materials Institute, and the College of Engineering. This state-of-the art research building will support research and student/postdoctoral fellow training in the physical sciences and engineering. The design is highly flexible to accommodate changes in research directions and to exploit new opportunities over the lifetime of the structure. The IRCB will house up to 26 faculty research groups from as many as seven different departments."

"During the 2015-2016 reporting period the University had a record high in proposals submitted for external contract & grant funding (1,301) which was 39 proposals higher than the previous year. "

"INCREASE THE NUMBER OF DEGREES AWARDED IN S.T.E.M. AND OTHER PROGRAMS OF STRATEGIC EMPHASIS The number of graduate and undergraduate degrees awarded across all programs of strategic emphasis has increased over the past 5 years. Graduate degrees across all strategic areas increased by 12.3% over the last 5 years with the greatest gains made in the number of degrees awarded in the areas of GAP Analysis (71% increase) and STEM (27% increase). We attribute these increases to the university’s focus on increasing faculty in STEM and Health fields.

The number of baccalaureate degrees awarded in STEM fields increased by 61% over the past 5 years. "

"We continue to focus on new degree programs in areas of strategic emphasis. The Master of Science in Nurse Anesthesia graduated the first cohort with 24 students completing their degree in Fall 2016. The Master’s in Physician Assistant Studies will begin in 2017-18 admitting 40 students with an expected graduation of Fall 2019.  The Interdisciplinary Medical Sciences baccalaureate degree program launched Fall 2016 and has accepted over 100 students in the major schedule who will graduate in the upcoming years. The Master’s in Statistics, which historically has only been offered on-campus, will also soon be delivered through distance education. Students will be able to complete 100% of the program requirements online."

  1. Ton of charts. I'll have to double check them later. I'll def watch the BoT meeting at some point. I've been generally underwhelmed by our D-level BoT for at least he last decade (not very aware of its on-goings prior to then).
