AMELIA ISLAND — Florida State University President John Thrasher — back in the state Senate district he formerly represented — boasted economic accolades of the university on Saturday.
At the Ritz-Carlton, Thrasher told a lunchtime crowd at the Greater Tallahassee Chamber of Commerce Annual Conference of the university's contributions to the city of Tallahassee, Leon County, the state of Florida and the country.
Thrasher said plans for the Jim Moran School of Entrepreneurship are "alive and well." A new earth, ocean and atmospheric science building on West Tennessee Street will break ground in October, he said, and a new residence hall at Jefferson Street and Woodward Avenue should be ready next fall. Also, the Champions Club renovations to Doak Campbell Stadium will be done by the start of FSU's first home football game of the season on Sept. 10.

He added the university's $1 billion Raise the Torch fundraising drive — expected to end in June 2018 — already has generated more than $920 million.
FSU's entrepreneurial drive, Thrasher said, is causing ripple effects across the region, the state and country.
“FSU is really really invested in the community, we’re proud of our contributions to it. We recognize that what makes FSU a great place to live and learn and work ... is where it’s located," he said. "What’s good for Tallahassee is good for FSU and vice versa.”
Other takeaways from Thrasher's speech:
  • In 2014-15, FSU had a $10 billion economic impact in Florida
  • FSU's nearly 42,000 students spent $876 million in 2014-15, contributing $44 million in sales tax to Leon County
  • FSU has created more than 94,000 jobs in Florida
  • FSU paid the city of Tallahassee $25 million in utilities last fiscal year.
  • Annually, between 500,000 and 750,000 visitors travel to Leon County for reasons related to FSU.
  • Nearly 1 million people have attended an FSU athletics event in the past year.

Madison Social taking over Moda
The owners of the popular College Town bar Madison Social are starting an Italian restaurant in the former spot of Moda, located next door to Madison Social. Murray described the new restaurant as non-traditional and reasonably priced. It's expected to open this fall. The Madison Social crew also has a beer garden in the works."
