"One big reason why FSU supports splitting the Engineering School: Poor
performance in the rankings.
Did you know that the FAMU/FSU College of Engineering is ranked #102 in the U.S. News rankings? That's simply unacceptable for a premier research institution. If FSU's primary goal is to become an elite academic institution, then it can never reach its goal being anchored down by a badly ranked engineering school run by FAMU. That's reality.

"Another reason? Poor performance in research.
The FAMU/FSU College of Engineering currently has annual research expenditures of $11 million. Annual research expenditures peaked in '04 at around $19 million.
http://www.eng.fsu.edu/prospective/graduate/research_centers.html
http://www.eng.fsu.edu/about/milestones.html
By comparison, NC State engineering has $154 million in annual research expenditures.
http://www.eng.fsu.edu/about/milestones.html
Georgia Tech? $689 million.
UF? $63 million.
Even UCF has annual research expenditures of $22 million.
http://cecs.ucf.edu/facts.php
Whether you like it or not, that's a complete and total failure by the FAMU/FSU College of Engineering. Those are facts.
And the Democrat is being intellectually dishonest by leaving those facts out of the discussion. "

"
In fact, the following schools have engineering programs:
University of Florida
University of Central Florida
University of South Florida
Embry Riddle Aeronautical University
Florida Institute of Technology
FAMU/ FSU
Florida Atlantic University
University of Miami
Florida International University
University of North Florida
The University of West Florida
Florida Gulf Coast University
Again, there is no reason why FAMU can't maintain an engineering program in the same city, especially if the two institution have different missions. "
"FAMU's law school wasn't simply restored. FAMU's new law school is much more
comprehensive than it was in 1968. The Democrat continues to ignore the fact
that the FAMU law school was down to 5 students when it closed in 1968. The new
FAMU law school is literally 100 times bigger than what it was in 1968. Net
gain to FAMU.
FSU's Engineering School was taken away in 1973. By your own reasoning, FAMU "stole" half of FSU's engineering program in 1982 when the college was formed. By your own reasoning, FSU's engineering school be restored and FAMU's discontinued completely. But that's not even the deal here. FAMU gets to keep the Engineering Program. Net gain to FAMU."

"What could be more crafty than FAMU complaining about a deal that would continue
funding FAMU at the level of a 2,500 student engineering school when it can only
contribute 400 students to the school? The only way that FAMU can run an
accredited engineering school comprised of 2,500 students is by forcing another
institution into a situation where the majority of the students come from the
other institution. How is that equitable?
The fact that the vast majority of the engineering school's budget is borne by FSU and 85% of the students comes from FSU is yet another reason why FAMU shouldn't be allowed to run a joint program with FSU. It's a completely unfair situation for FSU. "

"Here's a
quote from the below report from August, 1971:
"FSU was the second public institution in Florida to offer engineering. It has a "stand-alone true Engineering SCiences curriculum at both undergraduate and graduate levels. ... The State plans to phase out this program at the end of 1971-72, while transferring some remainders to another public institution...."
http://files.eric.ed.gov/fulltext/ED078801.pdf
Apparently is was an excellent program that suffered from lack of investment from the state. You can see from the report that the State hired "consultants" who discontinued FSU's program and gave the parts to UF and USF under the guise that they could educate students at a per student cost less than FSU.
And FAMU is ticked off about their law school?"
