FSU trustees give President McCullough a salary increase to $1M and a strong evaluation

FSU trustees give President McCullough a salary increase to $1M and a strong evaluation

FSU received about $109 million in new recurring funds along with new funding for capital projects for the 2023-2024 fiscal year, which ties into McCullough receiving the highest score for his goal of establishing relationships with elected and appointed governmental officials on all levels, such as the Florida Legislature.

McCullough's goals include efforts to make it into the nation’s top 15 public universities and making progress to become an Association of American Universities (AAU) member, both of which are listed as his first goal, as well as strengthening FSU’s research profile, increasing funding and improving fundraising initiatives.

FSU is currently ranked as no. 19 among the best public colleges and universities across the country — tied with the University of Maryland, the University of Washington and Rutgers — according to U.S. News & World Report, which will be announcing its latest rankings for 2023-2024 on Monday, Sept. 18.

When it comes to AAU membership, FSU was passed over by the association earlier this year, which came as a shocker to some of FSU's faculty as the University of South Florida and the University of Miami received invites instead.

Despite having a strong evaluation, comments under the goal of improving fundraising efforts — where nine out of 13 trustees said McCullough meets expectations — show what some of the members want to see that emphasized.

A trustee wrote, “Much work yet to do here. Parts of the needs have been addressed, but critical infrastructure is still lacking.”

The board members also discussed Trustee John Thiel’s suggestion for McCullough to make certain priorities — such as FSU Health — more prominent throughout his 2023-2024 goals.

The FSU Health initiative consists of a new FSU Health-Academic Health Center through a partnership between the university and Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare that is slated to be constructed in a couple of years.

“I don’t think that it’s prominent enough in his goals, whatsoever,” Thiel said during a Governance Committee meeting Thursday. “It shows up in one place by definition in goal three (investing in academic excellence), but not in goal one, and we’re not getting into the AAU without FSU Health.”

Free Speech Ranking

How do Florida's universities rank for free speech. Some do great, survey says. Some poorly.

Florida State University is one of the best colleges for free speech, according to a national free speech organization's just-released report.

Of around 250 schools surveyed, FSU ranked fifth.

Those surveys were done by the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression, or FIRE, along with College Pulse, an online survey research and analytics company.

"When there's been attempts to sanction some form of expression on campus, Florida State has, more often than not, defended speakers' rights, whether it's a student, faculty member or invited speaker," said Sean Stevens, FIRE's director of polling and analytics.

Other state schools didn't fare nearly as well.

The University of Florida got put at No. 231, which was not far ahead of the No. 235 University of Central Florida.

Florida State to discuss $285 million renovation to Doak Campbell Stadium

FSU stadium renovations hit season ticket holders

Florida State to discuss $285 million renovation to Doak Campbell Stadium

The proposal would remove 27,000 seats on the west side and add back 16,000. The work includes new club seating and a kitchen plus suites, lounges and “upgrades to antiquated infrastructure.” The stadium’s current capacity is 79,560.

The south end zone renovations would feature new loge boxes and installing “breathable mesh seats.”

The agenda item also has a May 2020 feasibility study by the consulting group CSL with an interesting rendering: Doak with what it calls a “roof structure.” That feature is not included in the proposal but is discussed in the study; the single most important enhancement, it says, is a roof structure. The 2020 report estimated a roof canopy would cost between $32 million and $60 million.

As part of the financial report, FSU lists $44.25 million in preliminary conference revenue in 2023. That figure grows to $60.6 million in 2028. Those figures are noteworthy given what happened at the last board meeting, when trustees and the school president openly discussed leaving the ACC because of its revenue gap with the SEC and Big Ten.

The $255 million debt figure does not include $8 million in previously received donations or $22 million in expected future contributions. For context, USF’s proposed on-campus stadium has a $340 million price tag, while $400 million is the starting point for upcoming renovations for the Gators’ Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.

FSU vs LSU Draws 9.1 Million Viewers

According to ESPN:

ESPN’s Labor Day Sunday Showdown Between No. 5 LSU and No. 8 FSU Registers 9.1 Million Viewers on ABC

Most-watched Sunday opener since 2016 (Notre Dame/Texas) & 2nd best on record

Those numbers are without Spectrum customers too! Imagine the ratings if everyone had access.

And to think it’d be higher but Spectrum dropped ESPN in Florida this weekend. They knew what they were doing. Can’t wait to watch FSU in the B1G on FOX

Lucky it was on ABC and not ESPN. Disney's blocking of spectrum would have lowered viewership significantly

By the way, only five regular season games had more viewers last season.

2022 ACC Championships game only got 3.47 M Viewers that feature 2 of the bigger ACC brands in Clemson vs North Carolina.

And in the meantime, we can compare it to the 2022 regular season's Top Ten:

1. Michigan at Ohio State — 17.14M
2. Tennessee at Georgia — 13.06M
3. Alabama at Tennessee — 11.56M
4. Alabama at Texas — 10.60M
5. Notre Dame vs. Ohio State — 10.53M
6. Alabama at Mississippi — 8.71M
7. Ohio State at Penn State — 8.27M
8. Alabama at LSU — 7.58M
9. Florida State vs. LSU — 7.55M
10. Texas A&M at Alabama — 7.15M

It would have been handily in the Top 6 against all of 2022 even with the Disney/Spectrum debacle!

https://medium.com/run-it-back-with-zach...eca4f6acbd

That game would have been the #6 highest rated game of the entire 2022 CFB regular season, and the highest rated game that didn't involve tOSU, Alabama or Georgia. There's no way to spin this, it was a great game and the ratings were awesome.
