Florida State ranked nation’s No. 1 law school for government careers

https://news.fsu.edu/news/business-law-policy/2020/01/31/florida-state-ranked-nations-no-1-law-school-for-government-careers/

TALLAHASSEE — preLaw magazine has ranked Florida State University College of Law the nation’s best law school for government careers. Additionally, FSU Law is ranked seventh best in the nation for public defender/prosecutor jobs and among the nation’s top seven law schools for public policy. The rankings, which are published in preLaw’s winter 2020 issue, reflect employment data, curricular offerings, and debt and loan repayment options.
According to preLaw, Florida State is the nation’s No. 1 law school for government careers because of hands-on opportunities and location. The magazine cited that nearly 30 percent of graduates obtain jobs in government.
“We are thrilled to be ranked the nation’s top law school for government careers and seventh best for prosecutors and public defenders,” said Dean Erin O’Connor. “A large majority of our students want to work in these areas, so providing them with opportunities inside and outside the classroom to gain pertinent experience and knowledge is very important to us. Helping each student reach their specific professional goals is critical, and we work diligently to ensure students have the opportunities and training they desire.”
preLaw also graded Florida State an “A” law school for public policy, which translates into FSU Law being one of the top seven schools in the nation. According to a preLaw article, law schools graded highly for public policy consider improving society through justice endeavors a key part of their mission. Many of FSU Law’s clinics, courses, externships and student groups focus on public policy.

2020 Budget

https://www.tallahassee.com/story/news/2019/06/07/florida-state-trustees-approve-1-9-billion-spending-plan-new-year/1383598001/

Florida State University’s Board of Trustees Friday voted to approve a $1.9 billion university spending plan for next year.
The approved operating budget represents a 6-percent increase, or $103 million more than the current budget. As is the case within the State University system, there is no tuition increase.
The university was able to build in the budget increase although it received less funding in this year’s state budget and no new performance-based funding from the state. A 3-percent decrease in Education and General funds this year from the state resulted in a loss of $17 million, according to university documents.
State support accounts for 29.87% of the 2019-2020 budget.
Despite this, FSU was able to free up extra money by reducing expenses by 4%, or $3 million. It also realized an increase in auxiliary funds of 4% or $9 million attributed to increased financial support from the Seminole Boosters to the Athletics Department and building improvements underway in housing.

SEC payout increase revenue GAP

ACC doesn't have much longer to last.

"Greg Sankey announced that approximately $651 MILLION of total revenue was divided among the 14 universities of the SEC for the 2018-19 fiscal year (up from $627.1 million distributed in 2017-18. That's $44.6 million per school. Wow."

"$44.6 million per school BEFORE the CBS package increases in value by 6X when it goes to ESPN."

A top five ranked Florida State basketball team is an extremely rare occurrence. In fact, it's only happened once and that took place all the way back during the 1972-73 season. Of course, that Hugh Durham coached team, which was coming off a national championship loss to UCLA, climbed all the way to No. 2 in the AP Poll.

The current hot streak led us to wonder what the longest winning streaks for FSU were under its current coach:

2016-17

Streak: 12 wins
Key Players: Dwayne Bacon, G; Jonathan Isaac, F; Xavier Rathan-Mayes, G
Finish: 26-9, second round of NCAA Tournament
Overview: After a heartbreaking loss to Temple in the NIT Season Tip-Off in Brooklyn on Thanksgiving Day, the Seminoles reeled off 12 straight wins during the 2016-17 campaign. During that stretch, FSU knocked off No. 21 Florida, No. 12 Virginia, No. 21 Virginia Tech and No. 7 Duke. FSU also notched nice wins over Big Ten teams in Illinois and Minnesota. The Seminoles would finish undefeated at home that season and fall one win shy of tying a then program record for total wins. FSU was upset by Xavier in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, 91-66.

2003-04

Streak: 10 wins
Key Players: Tim Pickett, G; Alexander Johnson, F; Anthony Richardson, F
Finish: 19-14, second round of NIT
Overview: In Leonard Hamilton’s second season on campus, Florida State got off to its best start ever, beginning the year a perfect 10-0. Notable wins over that stretch came against Northwestern, Ole Miss and Miami. FSU would enjoy its firs winning season in six years and notched impressive ACC wins over North Carolina, Wake Forest, Maryland and Georgia Tech. Unfortunately for FSU, it probably needed one more win to get an NCAA Tournament bid. FSU topped Wichita State in overtime to kick off the NIT before falling at home to Iowa State.

2019-20

Streak: 9 wins (current)
Key Players: Devin Vassell, G/F; Trent Forrest, G; M.J. Walker, G
Finish: TBD
Overview: Since falling at Indiana during the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, FSU has reeled off nine straight wins. During that stretch, the Seminoles have defeated six ACC teams, including then No. 7 Louisville on the road. The Seminoles trailed in the second half in five of those wins. FSU goes for 10 straight on Saturday night when it hosts Notre Dame.

2006-07

Streak: 8 wins
Key Players: Al Thornton, F; Toney Douglas, G; Isaiah Swann, G
Finish: 22-13, NIT quarterfinals
Overview: After falling to Wisconsin in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, Florida State upset No. 4 Florida to begin a stretch of eight straight wins. Aside from the defending national champions, the most notable win during that stretch was a 92-62 thumping of Providence in St. Petersburg. After an 0-3 start in ACC play, FSU would win five of six, but with guard Toney Douglas out with an injury, the Seminoles lost five straight ACC games. Florida State settled for an NIT bid where it fell at Mississippi State with a trip to New York on the line.

2017-18

Streak: 8 wins
Key Players: Phil Cofer, F; Braian Angola, G; Terance Mann, F/G
Finish: 23-12, Elite Eight
Overview: Florida State opened the 2017-18 season with eight straight wins before falling to Oklahoma State in the Orange Bowl Classic. It would be an up-and-down season for FSU from there, but the Seminoles turned it on when the NCAA Tournament got underway. After being awarded a No. 9 seed, the Seminoles knocked off Missouri, Xavier and Gonzaga before falling to Michigan one game shy of the Final Four. The win over Xavier was FSU’s first-ever in the NCAA Tournament over a No. 1 seed.

2018-19

Streak: 8 wins
Key Players: Mfiondu Kabengele, F; Terance Mann, F/G; Trent Forrest, G
Finish: 29-8, Sweet 16
Overview: After a 1-4 start to ACC play, FSU set a new program record by reeling off eight straight ACC wins. The Seminoles closed the regular season by winning 12 of 13 ACC games. FSU defeated Virginia Tech and eventual national champion Virginia in the ACC Tournament to reach the ACC Championship for just the third time ever. In the NCAA Tournament, the Seminoles topped Vermont and Murray State to reach the Sweet 16 for a season straight year. FSU was ultimately defeated by Gonzaga. Despite the loss, FSU set new program records for victories with 29 and ACC wins with 13.

New LED lights will brighten Howser Stadium

https://theosceola.com/new-led-lights-will-brighten-howser-stadium/

Crews have installed new LED lights at Dick Howser Stadium ahead of the start of the 2020 season. The lights will give players better vision and also provide opportunities to highlight players and accentuate big plays.
“We can turn them on and off,” FSU coach Mike Martin Jr. said. “They’re instant. They don’t have to warm up. We can do a light show for introductions or when somebody hits a home run. They turn garnet color. It’s pretty neat. And it saves a ton of money since they are LED.”
A group of eight donors contributed about $700,000 to make the new LED lights a reality, Martin Jr. said. And the program was able to use the current light poles, saving significant funds.
The lights have also been installed at an ideal time with the ACC Network planning broadcasts for the 2020 season. Martin Jr. said the investment became a necessity so that FSU could enjoy primetime slots on the ACC Network, which plans to showcase national broadcasts on Friday nights.

FSU added the new videoboard in 2018 and lights ahead of the 2020 season, which begins on Feb. 14 against Niagra at 6 p.m. What’s next on the long-term vision? Martin Jr. would like to see major improvements and one of the items at the top of the list is closing in booster boxes on the first-base line.
“Places for donors to go and to call their own is important,” Martin Jr. said. “All of the new parks – some of them go from foul pole to foul pole. … Tallahassee does get cold. Tallahassee does get hot. The open-air concept is great but there’s not many days of perfect weather where people want to be exposed to the elements.”
Martin Jr. also envisions an opportunity for boosters to tailgate in their box at Howser and then make the short walk to Doak Campbell Stadium for football games.

ACC Payout Rumor

https://floridastate.forums.rivals.com/threads/acc-network-will-lead-to-lower-revenue-payout.286875/

I heard from a source that FSU is beginning to expect that the launch of the ACC Network will actually lead to lower rather than increased revenue. The reason for this is because for a few years now, all ACC schools were receiving a $3 million penalty payment (per school) because ESPN didn't launch the ACCN in a timely fashion. That penalty payment now goes away, and the payout will be based on the number of subscribers along with the per-subscriber fees from the broadcasters.

But the low number of subscribers may not be enough to match the $3M penalty fee. I was wondering if the Warchant staff had heard something similar.

The ACC is in a potential revenue dilemma yet again

http://allsportsdiscussion.com/2020/01/05/the-acc-is-in-a-potential-revenue-dilemma-yet-again/

There was a story from a couple of weeks, that we wanted to address though.
ACCPerscription tells us about a potential television rights deal for the SEC that would increase SEC team revenue by a whopping $20 Million per team per year. This is the CBS deal for for the SEC’s top football games, that are up for renegotiation.
This was after Big 10 signed a short-term 6 year deal with the ESPN/FOX which increased their Television rights revenues to to over $50 Million a year per Forbes.com.
With the current increases in revenues, the Big 10 will be renegotiating another deal by the mid 2020s, and by all accounts will get another significant increase.
I expect the SEC will follow suit with their new football deal to be fairly short term so they can renegotiate in less than 10 years.
The ACC’s rights are signed through the 2035-2036 season, and that’s a problem. While the ACC Network will increase revenue for the ACC by $5 – $10 Million a year, the ACC is largely handcuffed for additional revenue sources, while the Big 10 and SEC portioned their rights or parts of them for frequent negotiation.
Nearly 10 years ago the ACC tackled the revenue dilemma by starting a network, but what are the options now?
Frankly they are rather limited.

The ACC may have to think outside the box, and form some alliances with the other 2 Power 5 conference that are in near as desperate revenue state – the Big 12 and Pac 12.
Far too often the ACC, Big 12, and Pac 12 have tied their agreements (like bowls) with the Big 10 and SEC. Why do this every time?
The ACC, Big 12, Pac 12 should form scheduling agreements in all sports which would increase quality inventory for all conferences.
Pitch it to ESPN and FOX… and see what happens, then create short term deals.
The ACC has about 4 years to work on this, before the SEC deal starts new. If they do nothing, then the chaos of 2010-2012 will repeat itself at some point in the future.
